Your vehicle’s suspension is made up of many parts, including the steering system and wheels, that work together to make it easy for you to navigate your automobile. The suspension takes a lot of abuse, and on top of that, many drivers forget about it until there’s a problem. Midwest Auto Care & Transmission Center lists six signs you might have suspension problems below, so you can catch the problems early before they become an even bigger issue.
Pulling to the Right or Left
Vehicles that pull to the right or left even though the steering wheel is pointed straight generally have a wheel alignment issue. The problem could also be a bad shock absorber or, if the vehicle pulls to one side when you brake, a warped rotor or stuck caliper.
Off-Center Steering Wheel
Another way to tell that your wheels are not aligned is to look at your steering wheel. When the wheels are pointed straight, the logo in the center of the steering should be upright. If it’s at an angle, the steering wheel is off-center, meaning the wheels aren’t aligned.
You Can Feel the Road Bumps
Shocks and struts are also part of your vehicle’s suspension system and they keep your ride smooth. If your ride has suddenly become very bumpy and bouncy, it might time to replace the struts and/or shock absorbers. Suspension springs could also be the culprit.
Low Corner or Corners
Speaking of suspension springs, if you notice that your car, truck, crossover, or SUV is sitting low on one corner when you approach it in a parking lot, you’ve probably broken the suspension spring on that wheel. A broken suspension spring will make clunking noises.
Reactive Body Motion
Going back to the struts and shocks, they prevent your auto’s body from reacting to your driving. In other words, if they’re in good shape, they won’t allow your vehicle to dive forward when you brake, lean backward when accelerate, or roll to the side when you turn.
Steering Difficulties
Finally, steering problems can manifest in the suspension system. If the power steering fluid is low, this is a quick fix. More serious steering problems include power steering pump failure or worn out or broken control arm bushings in the suspension.
